The bITjAM is a response to a real need in the creative community for a space in which to explore digital arts, creative ideas, collaborations and soundscapes. Carl Plant and Ben McManus are the main animators of the bitjam, playing, organising, publicising, delivering workshops and digitally animating spaces. They are aware that the main aim of biTjAM is about collaborating and sharing ideas, communication through sound and value of experimentation.

Since its inception, biTjAM have been involved in collaborations with visual artists from all over the midlands. Musicians and sound artists from Stoke to Stockholm have travelled to be a part of the experience and have intern continued some of these creative collaborations.

    1st October bITjAM arrangement

We’ve decided to try out an original idea we used in the early days at the bITjAM. We will be writing a score for the improvised piece this month and if it’s a success then we may continue the idea every now and then.

We hope to focus the October bITjAM on the visual artists as the main guests, more will be confirmed asap.

The main audio and visual piece will be performed as a collaborative effort as per usual. While allowing the performers to improvise, listen and augment the sound and visual outputs, there will be a number of ‘arranged’ elements pre selected, in this case a number of samples and written instructions.

The samples can be downloaded from this link.

The instructions for the piece are as folllows:

    • For any number of audio and visual performers
    • The tempo (bpm) can exist between 85bpm and 125bpm
    • The performers can organise themselves so that specific frequencies or roles (percussion, bass, vocals) can be distributed
    • The audio performers will interact with the visual output and in return the visual performers must interact with the audio output. This can be done in any given way, such as software programming or manually.
    • The ‘feel’ of the performance will reflect the descriptive terms mentioned below:
      • Ghostly
      • Open
      • Relaxed
      • Surreal
      • Dream like
      • Stressed
      • Anxious
      • Determined
    • The piece can last between 30 and 90 minutes.
